THIS MANE

Why did you cut your hair?
You look like a boy now
Small and lean with manly features, no one will ever take you seriously.
Why did you cut your hair?
You are one of the guys now. Your beauty is gone now,
Faded with the clippers who dared to shave it off
On the floor folded in little black puffs
Starting at you, annoyed, you must be so brave and yet so silly
Why did you cut your hair? You didn’t have money to make it?
No one is gonna call you a lady now
You’re only as valuable as the hair on your scalp.
Do you not read the bible? What happened to your covering?
Will you find a man to marry you?
ENOUGH!!
Why do you question me?
Why do you think my mane defines me? Speaks for me? Characterizes me?
You made me give silly excuses, lies and funny responses
Complicated answers and meaningless words
So you can nod and accept me and stop talking about me
So your jokes wouldn’t hurt as much and your words wouldn’t cut so deep
But the truth laid in plain sight for all to see
The truth was never hidden, you just were to judgmental to see that
This mane does not define me.
